Can You Eat to Lower Your Blood Pressure?

According to the American Heart Association, one-third of Americans over the age of 20 suffer from high blood pressure.

That one-third is approximately 85 million people. Moreover, around 20% of these people have no idea that they have a problem.

High blood pressure is epidemic, and yet there are things we can do to fight this silent killer. Weight loss and diet are important factors, and there are certain foods that you can eat to help manage blood pressure. Fish oil, for example, is quite helpful. One gram per day has been proven to benefit. It’s full of anti-inflammatory properties that can help lower blood pressure that’s already high or just starting to become a problem.

Fish oil can also help you slim down. Research has found that it causes ordinary fat to transform into special “brown fat” tissue that burns calories to generate heat.

But fish oil isn’t the only thing that can help. A University of Illinois study found that increasing water intake by as little as one glass a day can flush enough sodium from the system to lower blood pressure. Staying hydrated also keeps the capillaries helpful and allows for enhanced blood flow.

Happily, dark chocolate can help lower blood pressure in people who already have high blood pressure. The theory is that the compounds in cocoa help create nitric oxide, which widens blood vessels and eases blood flow.

Surprisingly, drinking coffee also helps. A new French study of 200,000 people revealed that coffee and tea can actually lower blood pressure. The theory here is that the antioxidants present in both beverages diffuse inflammatory substances in the blood stream.

Finally, there are some other steps you can take to lower your blood pressure when you feel stressed. Deep breathing exercises are effective, and research shows that interacting with pets can have a positive impact on blood pressure.
