The Next Great Digital Transformation

A digital revolution is happening right now and most people aren’t aware of it.

Like most revolutions, there’s a long period of time from when the seeds of change are planted to when they come into full bloom. In 1977, engineers at Xerox PARC debuted their personal computer, the “Alto.” Looking back at this, you would expect for this to have been a singular moment. Instead, the presentation was largely met with yawns from disinterested executives.

While we may scoff at the way these executives reacted, most likely we would have done the same. After all, the first computers were unattractive, hard to use, and ultimately performed menial tasks that were already carried out by low-paid individuals. From the perspective of running a company, what upside did these cumbersome contraptions provide?

Obviously, the computer was being taken at face value, and very few people at the time envisioned that these electronic devices would grow in capability to include achieving interconnectivity on the grand scale of the Internet. This initially overlooked personal computer went on to forever change every aspect of our lives, and indeed the entire world.

Looking back at the PC’s lukewarm reception forces us to wonder if there are other ideas out there that are being overlooked or doubted, specifically within the world of technology. Considering the traditional lag-time between the genesis of an idea and implementation, we usually see that around three decades pass. This means that today’s idea will not likely come into full swing until the next generation is already in the workforce.

Peering into our crystal balls, we see that the specs of the traditional laptop are becoming less and less relevant. Moore’s Law, which was believed to be the scientific law that limits the amount of storage possible on a microchip, has been proven to underestimate the physical limitations of keeping data. Even more impressive is the evolution of quantum computing, a system of processing that is able to run models of enormous complexity, to include mathematically analyzing all properties of the physical world.
